Northrop's Phenomenon
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Evidence has been found that Northrop's phenomenon (so called by us) is produced in the digestion of casein or hemoglobin brought about by trypsin, papain, and pepsin either crude or crystalline in the presence of gelatin. 2. Anson's and Kunitz' methods permit the measure of proteolytic activity of any protease on casein or hemoglobin substrate in the presence of gelatin, even in very small quantities and with prolonged digestion time.

The Ultraviolet Absorption Spectrum of Pepsin
The ultraviolet absorption spectrum of Northrop's pure crystalline pepsin has been determined. The curve of calculated molecular extinction coefficients is given. There is noted a general resemblance of the absorption curve for pepsin to that for urease and tyrosine; the absorption band is maximum at 2750-2800 A.micro., minimum near 2500. A slight hump on either side of the peak of the extincti...
متن کاملJohn Howard Northrop
On Ju ly 5, 1981, John Howard Northrop will reach the venerable age of four score and ten. He is active and well for a man of his age but a bit unhappy that his diminished eyesight makes him no longer the skeet supermarksman he once was. The Editors of The Journal of General Physiology and some of Dr. Northrop's friends wish to use this occasion to express their grati tude for his 62-year-long ...
متن کاملThe Absorption of Ultra-violet Radiation by Crystalline Pepsin
Determination of the absorption spectra of pure preparations of Northrop's crystalline pepsin inactivated by irradiation with ultra-violet light shows that the total absorption in the ultra-violet region of the spectrum increases with the degree of inactivation. This increase is especially marked between 2400 and 2750 A.u. The rate of photoinactivation is shown to be sensitive to changes in pH,...
متن کاملSimultaneous Hydrolyses of Esters and Proteins at Saturation Levels
A direct titration method for the determination of proteolytic activity is discussed. This involves the potentiometric measurement of the volume of 0.08 N NaOH required to maintain a constant pH (8.0) during the time of the hydrolysis. I t is a sensitive method which presents several advantages; ds., it measures simultaneonsly protease and esterase activity, it follows the hydrolysis very dosdy...
متن کاملExperiments on Toleration of Temperature by Drosophila. by Harold H. Plough Ai~-d
In connection with experiments by one of us on the effect of high temperature on the amount of crossing over in Drosophila it became obvious that differences exist among various cultures of this fly in the ability to withstand temperatures above the normal range and in the ability to breed at these temperatures. A series of comparative tes ts was therefore undertaken in order to gain more accur...
